• Hotel peepholes can easily be tampered with, risking the security of a hotel
  • Hidden cameras can film the inside of the room without the guests realising
  • Famous case against ESPN reporter Erin Andrews was targeted by stalker who took a naked video of her
  • He went on to explain how easy peepholes are to damage

Hotel security is the top of most travellers minds, regarding the safety of their items.

The hotel safe is often a good place to put any expensive and valuable items, despite a recent revealing of how easily they can be broken into.

One part of the room should always be checked when entering a hotel, with many people not realising the safety repercussions.

The peephole can hide a terrifying secret if tampered with in a room.

Hotel secrets reveal why guests should always check this part of the room first to stay safe

The peephole could have been altered to add a secret camera

A door peephole is often used by guests to check who is outside their room.

This could be used in reverse, which many people may not realise.

If it is damaged or has been tampered with, guests should immediately ask to change rooms.

This is because the peephole could have been altered to add a secret camera to film the inside of the room.

Michael Forrest Jones, CEO of Beechmont Hotels, explained what to do if a peephole has been altered with on forum Quora.

He said: “Find a piece of notepaper (there should be some on the desk or nightstand in your room), tear off a strip of it, roll it up and twist it until it’s about the size of a cigarette butt, and ‘plug’ it in the peephole.”

In 2008, ESPN reporter Erin Andrews was targeted by a stalker who filmed her naked through a hotel room peephole.

He then posted the video online, before explaining how easily he was able to tamper with the peephole to do so.

In 2009, he was sentenced to two and a half years in jail.

There are other ways in which guests can stay safe during a hotel stay.

Buying a simple £1 doorstop could end up saving a life.

Quora user David Klain explained: ”When staying in a hotel, you can put that door stop under the door preventing someone from breaking in (the chain on the door will stop no one).”

This could help during both an attack or a robbery.

He stated: “In the case of a terrorist attack or lone gunman or active shooter incident, typically they will go through all rooms.

“But, if they can’t get the door open, move on to other rooms before working their way back to the doors that wouldn’t open.

“This buys you time for you to get away or police to respond. The doorstop can also be used in an office or other location should a situation take place.”

It has also been revealed which is the safest room to choose in a hotel.
